Week 26 - I have a Chilean Doppelganger!

February 24, 2014

Hey guys,

How are ya doing?  It's been a weird week, but I made it! Let's see what happened…. Wednesday, we stacked several tons of wood; Thursday we met a missionary from Brazil (not sure from which church) that was heading up to Villarrica and bumped into Freddy, one of our investigators who is about 80 years old and was in his underwear; Friday, I found a spider living in my garments and we knocked a richer arian... I mean Chilean suburb; Saturday we taught another family in their underwear and Sunday I found out I have a doppelgänger in Mendoza, Argentina! Like I said it was a strange week.

Wednesday was awesome! Woke up and visited the familia Cortes. We found out that they were doing the laundry for the week. We then asked Hermano Cortes about wood. We had heard that he had recently bought some and we wanted to find out where he got it and how much. He asked if we were looking and we said yes. He said stop. He told us to come by and take as much ulmo (the most expensive and best kind down here) as we needed and when we ran out to take some more. We told him that we couldn't except this offer along with the other which we already act on (taking all the fruit, eggs, and vegetables we can eat from his fruiteria) He simply told us that when he covenanted to live the law of consecration he meant it and to tell the President to talk to him if he had any problems with the offer. We then left and fixed a few citas with some investigators and came back home for lunch. We left for the Chandias house where we then stacked a warehouse of 78 barras. ( 3 barras = a cubic meter of wood) if that gives you an idea to the size of this).  We then taught them the restauración, With them being extremely evangelico this was a miracle on its own. We then taught a menos activo family the Retamals. They're doing great!

Thursday, We took a collectivo to the mirador and knocked. We set up citas with investigators and talked to a few menos activos.  It's there that we bumped into the Brazilian missionary. She had spent some time in the states so her English was better than her Spanish. So that was fun. It's a little weird for me to talk about the gospel in English now though. She then told us that she was heading up to Villarrica the next day with a couple other missionaries to preach. I told her about it and how slow the work was, at least for mormon missionaries and she told me by the sound of it that she would love it. We then went down to teach Freddy and found him in his underwear!  he said he was a little busy and I really couldn't seriously teach the gospel while I'm laughing my head off so that was ok…..

Friday, I woke up and started the daily battle with the califont. After about 15 minutes of tinkering it started up so I grabbed some garments and when I put them down I just about died as I watched a huge spider crawl out of them. So, me and Elder Abarca torched the annoying, not so little bugger with a bit of alcohol and I took my shower, but when I came out it was still kicking! So I stepped on it and went outside to grab my razor and came back to find it still moving so I finally picked it up with some comfor or T.P. and crushed the thing with way more force than it should have taken. We then headed out and tracted for a little bit, came back had lunch and then headed out to the really rich part of our sector. We had a few ok contacts but for the most part people were just as rude as normal and we got a lot of nos via intercoms. After that we went to a small subdivision it was kind of funny just about everyone was white and all of the children were blond with blue eyes… a rich german neighborhood. We taught Freddy afterwards (he was wearing pants) and then came home. Freddy is a good investigator but he has the same problem understanding the apostasy that a lot of Catholics seem to have.  But a large part of that is that they don't know the history of the Catholic church, when it started and how it was run after it was going.

Saturday started off normal. We tracted a bit up in the mirador after lunch and then had a lesson with Monica and our first counselor.  When we picked him up his wife said I looked like her son. We got to Monica’s and she dropped us, so that was kind of a bummer. But, the missionaries have been teaching her for over a year and she has only been to church 4 times and because it was my first time meeting her I just didn't feel that bad. We knocked a little up there made some good contacts, a hilarious guy who was drunk but told us he was an ex-mormon and he will never drink coffee... We then went down and walked to Luis’ house, a menos activo. We knocked and surprise! Luis's daughter came out pulling a Freddy... ya a bit awkward! Reminded me a bit of Uncle Bengt’s old missionary stories. She went upstairs to grab her dad (and we had hoped some pants). We were partially disappointed when she came back but at least she brought her dad. We then read some chapters in the book of Mormon all the while hoping and praying that Luis would tell his teenage daughter to put some pants on. We were once again disappointed... We left a little red faced and headed for Joel Chandia's house and taught him with his wife.  She gave us the usual envangelico garbage that Lucifer can appear as an angel of light and the threat at the end of Revelation "whoever shall add or take away from this prophecy the sames name shall be taken from the book of life.” I asked her if she believed that the compilers and translators of the Bible had their names stripped, she didn't know what to think about that. Like most of the evangelicos I know she didn't even kinda understands where the bible came from, so we explained that and then tried to teach her husband who is extremely receptive while she was confused and not attacking us. By the time she got going again it was close to 9:55 so we asked her to leave us with a prayer in which she asked God to bless us for sharing His word. She turned out to be one of those nice evangelicos and not the mean ones who tell us that were stealing souls away from the general public.

Sunday was crazy! I introduced myself to the ward and it was kind of weird though, it felt like everyone was looking at me funny.  They all just looked really confused at why I was there. All of church was like that.  Well we left with the Gonzalez family for lunch and she told me when we picked up her husband before that I looked exactly like her son.  Well her son was in the car with us and looking at him, he looks nothing like me!  But, as we were at the table eating she keeps telling me that I look exactly like her son and that the whole ward agreed when I was up on the stand. I guess that explains the weird looks.  Well I apparently look like her other son who is on his mission in Argentina Mendoza. Well they finally show me a picture and I can tell you right now that looking at him freaked me out! He looks more than a little like me so I can now say that I look like at least one Chilean. Monica also told some of the members in the mirador that she wants a noche de hogar so we are getting a second chance! We then had a noche de hogar with familia Retamal, the mamita’s family and her inactive son and came home! Long day!

Well guys that was my week I hope yours was as good as mine. Have a great week to come!

Week 25 - Saying Goodbyes in Villarrica

 Familia Barria

February 18, 2014

Hey guys,

Well I'll just try to sum up this amazing week with the little time I have left on the server. Monday I left the cyber and went out to lunch with Elder Souza and Elder Palmer and we hit up the Taquería Azteca which as usual was amazing! We left there and went to Lider where I proceeded to buy some American junk food with Elder Paulson. Because when you’re leaving in the next few days there’s not really much of a point to buying anything else. We then left came home, cleaned a bit and got ready to head out. We left and didn't teach anyone till we came to Barbara’s house and then we taught an amazing lesson on the Atonement! It was going fairly average until after I had just finished bearing my testimony and Barbara's father the ex-member, who doesn't really want us there and really doesn't like to be around when we are, walks in and bears his own testimony of the Atonement and how he can never stop trying to repay a debt that he can't ever repay and how grateful he was for the Savior. Then he started talking about his old church life and how much he used to love to read the Book of Mormon! It was incredilble!

The next day was pretty sad.  I said my goodbyes to Sergio and the family, Jesse and taught a lesson to Carlos Ramierez.

Oh my gosh I'm out of time again I promise that next time I will use the whole gosh darn hour to write a behemoth of a letter!

Love you guys sooo much!

Week 24 - I'm getting transferred!

February 10, 2014

Hey guys,

I’m getting transferred!  Puerto Varas! The prettiest area in the mission!  Everyone hates me right now ;) My companion is Elder Abarca. It’s a Spanish name but everyone has told me he is super gringo! I move on Wednesday.

Puerto Varas

It’s been a pretty good week! After writing you guys we walked to Lider and I spent 16 mill instead of 15.  I know, extremely irresponsible of me but I only have one year left to be a teen... and lets be honest who can decide between steak and cake, so I took both! Went out at 6 as usual, didn't find anyone but as we were about home we said hi to a man in his yard and started talking to him. He had gotten hit with a truck and while it's healing, he still has a pretty massive head wound.  Well we started to teach a little when his daughter came out with a list of scriptures for us to read, you know to destroy our faith and convert us to the Pentecostal faith... what any 15 year old would do... and then his other daughter who knew a ton about the Book of Mormon, and as I knew and Elder Wise figured out, not in a good way... and then his wife... well by then it was four on two but we got a few actual decent lessons out of it and "resolved" all of their questions.

Tuesday was great! I woke up, got in my suit and got all of my things ready for my intercambio (split) with elder Souza and for my birthday.  I found out that the zone leaders and all of Pucon was going to be there and you just don't have many occasions to have a birthday party with half your zone! So I filled my zippo lighter, sharpened a knife, made a case for the knife, brought some candles, the cake of course and headed out. We got there and it turned out that the sisters had made me a pie and wrapped a gift for me! Everyone sang happy birthday and made sure to include Sister Biggs (her's is next week). We cut the cake and it wasn't as good as I thought it would be.  It's called mil hojas and it's essentially phyllo with a literal ton of manjar. But I had my cake and ate it too so I can't really whine about it. After that I went to Volcan with Elder Souza, we had a couple of citas (appointments) fall and it rained a ton but we ended up teaching a really cool family.  In the end, he did want me to teach the curse on the Lamanites though... luckily I was smart enough to opt out. We came home, planned, and then he taught me how to cook the perfect pot of rice. Woke up the next day and after a hilarious attempt to have a one handed push up contest we finished the other half of the pie the sisters gave me and opened the present to find a kinder egg. I got a sick gorilla and some grizzly bear stickers! Came home and opened the presents from home and got a fantastic Duck Dynasty card, some ties and 3-2-1 cake mix!  We had a fun noche de hogar with the Presidente and Sergio and finished the night off with some birthday steak! I'll have to write about the rest of the week next week because I'm out of time but I can tell you right now it was fantastic!

Love you all!

Week 23 - Pizza de Doritos!

February 3, 2014

Elder Rivera and Elder Santisteban

Hey guys!

How was your week? Mine was a little bit nuts but still amazing! After we emailed last week we went to Lider of course!  I bought cheese, tortilla chips, salsa, and jalapeños. You can guess what the food of the week was... After we came home we went out at 6:00 to proselyte as usual. As we were walking down the hill I heard some heavy metal playing so I swung a left and headed to Jacob's house. Of course he was playing a little Metallica so we popped in an set up a cita for this week and hung out and talked for a bit. We then headed down to fix a date for a noche de hogar with the Barrias. We also needed to take the Elders of Pucòn up to our place. This would have been really easy if someone had charged the cell but of course someone forgot again... so we ended up going down to central and walking around searching instead of going to the house, charging the phone, and telling them the directions for a radio taxi.. ya! Not a fun night. We came home, charged the cell and what do ya know… got a call not 10 minutes later! We told them our directions and they took a radio up while we planned. They got there at about 10:10. I made nacho's, which Elder Santisteban laughed at, calling it a pizza de doritos. It was a little hard to laugh though, when he had his mouth full with my nachos as he was eating his words! Woke up at 6 a.m. and caught the 7:20 to Lanco. It was weird because it was actually on time, which meant we had to wait an hour till the meeting started. The meeting was great and I got some pictures with my plane buddies and Elder Gubler. Left the meeting at 1 but didn't get home till like 5 because we spent 3 hours waiting for a bus instead of taking one to Loncoche and heading out from there. That evening we taught Barbara and she told us that she had honestly never felt like she had received an answer to a prayer. I bore my testimony of revelation through scripture study and she told us she would try to find answers in the Book of Mormon every day.

Wednesday was kind of a bummer. It started as usual. Woke up, showered, got dressed, made breakfast and started studying, (these past few weeks I've been compiling all of my bible underlines, it took a while but I have 287 of them! now I'm transferring them all to my Spanish scriptures). We left the house at 10:30 a.m. and did some service weeding. Afterwards we went to mamita's for lunch and she told us that she couldn't be our mamita anymore. We didn't teach after that, unfortunately. Thursday was a little crazy we taught Sergio and got him to commit to come to church.  We were supposed to leave for correlation but ended up getting called into a young single adults meeting to set up for Friday. We left at about 9:30 and came home. Friday we woke up at 6 and headed to the old high school with the elders of Pucon who had slept at our house again. We got there and started to wake up the 300 young men sleeping in the polytechnico. Elder Santisteban had the cool pinch lip whistle that made our work easy and our ears bleed! Afterwards we went to the devotional our mission president gave on missionary work and we then took out 300 young men and women and did a chapel open house and some contacting. They taught a lot but we didn't get anyone that day. Had interviews with President and then came home.

Saturday was really crazy. We got up and left with the Biggs to do some record work.  We were in the middle of sending out dead names when we got a call from the sisters.  We heard screaming in the back ground as Hermana M told us that her companion had burnt herself with boiling water. Well we all freaked out and rallied all of the matromonial missionaries, including President and Sister Rappleye, who happened to be in town. Fortunately, it turned out to be nothing but some superficial 1st degrees and not the 3rd's that popped into my head! Not too much happened after that and we ended up taking a bus to Relun and teaching Carlos.  He's still got a few things to work on but he's progressing. We watched the air show in town as we walked back home and they had some amazing pilots.  Sunday was absolutely amazing! We had three investigators come to church including Carlos and Sergio and his family. Considering how rare it is to get one person to church, this was nuts for me! We had lunch with the President and taught the Cuevas family afterwards. Well as you can see my week was hectic/awesome I hope you guys have a great week too!
